TULSA, Oklahoma –
The Tulsa Dream Center is educating children about Black historical figures in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The center said the event was about enabling kids to see people like themselves through history.
“There are people that look just like them that were able to learn and achieve greatness in the midst of difficulties,” said Tim Newton, Tulsa Dream Center.
Kids got hands on learning with science, coding, and electricity, and got their own copies of a book about Black leaders in STEM.
The dream center hopes tonight inspires dreaming and bringing that dream to life inside the minds of the students.
“We dream no small dreams. We want our boys and girls to dream big dreams about being engineers, being mathematicians, being scientists, being individuals that want to just change the world,” said Newton.
Tim Newton said some kids think they don’t have a future in STEM fields. He said thanks to Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance, events like this make STEM education more accessible in every community and can inspire the next generation of Black STEM figures.
“We actually want them to see them to see themselves in these historical figures. We want them to say, ‘Hey I could be the next Mae Jemison’ and so on and so forth,” said Savannah Chamberlin with Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance.
Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance said when it comes to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – everyone is welcome and has a seat at the table.
“STEM is everywhere, STEM is everyone and all are welcome,” said Chamberlin.
Tulsa Dream Center said it plans to have more STEM Nights in the future.
